Lag Issues for the Boneyards comp

Post by Wilfrid DeCuir »

Speaking with various surfers while practicing at the Boneyards, we all seem to share the same concerns with the lag over there and if anything will be done to fix this for this weekends competition.

Normally at these events, we are asked to remove scripted items and various attachments and that only current surfers and officials be on sim. With this competition, here are some of the issues:

1- The sharks are way cool, but are scripted items and probably not necessary to be rezzed for this comp. (Every little bit counts.)

2- Where will the stand be, on the deck next to the shop or on the next sim, AlterNation?

3- I've noticed at any given time there are 3 to 5 avatars in bones in the south end cave just sitting around doing nothing except adding to the lag. These ppl should not be there during the competition. Further, it may be a cool gimmick to have on this sim, personally it just adds to the lag and should be permanently removed since the yards have always been laggy even before it's recent redesign. All surf sim owners strive to create the best possible surfing environment with the least amount of lag, why should the yards be any different???

4- Will the store be closed during the comp? Makes it pretty hard to compete by having all kinds of ppl teleporting to the sim and shop thereby adding to the lag. Also the lag spikes whenever someone TP's in or out would cause enormous amounts of frustration if this would happen during a critical move for a trick or rock avoidance and can make a huge different in scores.

If any if not all of these issues are not addressed, this comp may turn into a lag fest. With the waves poofing when a rock is touched and the lag would be that bad this sat that you can't even make a decent turn to avoid the rocks, this will be a complete waste of time to everyone.

Thanks and lest have some fun out there.

Hi Wil, and thanks for your post!! :)
Feedback from the membership, to the event organisers is very much appreciated and will be addressed if at all possible!

Prior to all major events, the competition event team makes a check for and recommends corrections to the sim owner, based on their own and the experience of the surfing membership.

You're right, the "yard" is no different in this respect, and the points you raise will be addressed, as they would normally.

Specifically:
1) All physics based objects and unnecessary "top" scripts will be disabled for the duration of the competition. Including Sharks, Falling Coconuts, Seagulls etc.
2) The Stand will be on Alternation.
3) Avatars on boneyard will be restricted to competitors and officials for the duration of the comp. Surf sim owners do try to create the best possible surf environment with the least amount of lag. But that does'nt mean a bare open water sim with nothing but waves. That would becoming pretty dull pretty fast. So a balance should be set between aesthetics and performance.
4) See 3 (the sim will be on access list control for the duration of the comp)

I hope this helps to address your concerns!!

.. and most definitely yes! let's have fun out there, and let's all help to make this a great comp! :)

Cheers, Sal

ps. as usual make sure all unnecessary attachments, scripted objects etc are removed while competing, keep "textures" (different clothes etc) to a minimum. Cut the sim a break, by reducing your graphics settings to the minimum you need to see the waves (and rocks :P)
