SLSA Competition Name Change

It has come to the attention of the SLSA Board of Directors that there has been some confusion stemming from calling the first and second sets of our competitions “Pro” and “Invitational”, especially among surfers who have not yet competed. To some, it appears that one must already be a “pro” rider to register for what is an open registration competition. After discussion and voting, the Board decided the following:

Beginning with the next competition at Bundoran Reef, we will try to make it more clear that the first competition is open to everyone. The October 16th competition will be referred to as “Open”, while the one on October 23rd will be called “Pro”.

The First Rankings of the New Season

MAN, this season is already off like a shotgun blast isn’t it? The Mori Pwani Epic Pro Competition ran like clockwork and was a lovely 3 hours long. By contrast, the exciting Mori Pwani Epic Invitational Competition was 7 hours long, and filled with great surfing and AMAZING scores. Congratulations to all the surfers who surfed! We’ve got your individual and team rankings under the cut!

Mavericks WaveWhile we were all at Mori Resort in Second Life enjoying our fun and sun, Real Life’s bravest pro-surfers were battling the waves in The Mavericks Surf Contestยฎ, a half mile off the coast of Half Moon Bay, CA, USA.ย  During the contest the spectators found themselves inadvertantly becoming a part of the action when rogue waves swept them from the seawall as well as damaging some of the equipment and scaffolding being used by officials, causing the awards ceremonies to be moved to a nearby hotel. Read more about the incident on The Associated Press: here. Also congratulations to the winner Chris Bertish of South Africa, and much respect for all of the surfers who competed in those amazing conditions!
